KOCHI: Kerala University has been allotted athletics, the premier event of the all-India inter-university sports calendar, this year. The event has been fixed to start on October 15, but with the relaying work on the University Stadium’s synthetic track in Thiruvananthapuram yet to start, the championship is likely to be held only in December.

“We will start laying the track soon and hope to finish it by October,” said Eugene Sunil, the Assistant Director-in-charge of the Kerala University’s Department of Physical Education, on Friday. “We will conduct the championship during the Christmas vacation.”

While athletics has been postponed, there are no takers for swimming. Raising finance to host the event seems to be the problem.

Madras University will host men’s inter-zone cricket, while Annamalai (Chidambaram, men’s football), Bharathidasan (Tiruchi, men’s basketball and hockey) and Mahatma Gandhi (Kottayam, badminton) are among the other hosts.
