BANGALORE: Javagal Srinath surely has a sense of humour. As a posse of media personnel surrounded him at the KSCA (B) Ground on Thursday evening, Srinath with a bemused `why-me?' expression, craned his neck, looked around, said `Rahul' and pointed out towards the National Cricket Academy. The Indian skipper however had already left and the media was in no mood to leave Srinath and the former India speedster graciously obliged to speak.

With the forthcoming tour of Ireland and England lined-up, and with the Indian cricketers also having a camp here, it was understandable that the focus was on English conditions and the lessons that fast bowlers can learn.

    Good conditions

"There cannot be a better education for fast bowlers than bowling in England. The conditions are such that fast bowlers can learn a lot and in Venkatesh Prasad as a bowling coach, they have a man who is up to the challenge of guiding these bowlers.

No doubt, he has a big task but I am sure he will handle it well and he is ready for it," Srinath said. Talk then veered towards the `coaching-crisis' and queries were also raised on the resultant stress on Rahul Dravid and on the appointment of Chandu Borde as manager.

"I know it is taxing to plan and strategise everything without a coach but I am confident of Rahul handling it very well. He has got the right mental make-up for it. He can handle it and he is a fine captain though the results may not necessarily show, he knows his players well and I am sure soon the results will follow. Yes I do know that the BCCI has appointed Mr. Borde as manager, and we got to respect the man for the job he has got," Srinath said.

    Injury problems

Probed on the injury woes afflicting Indian fast bowlers, Srinath said: "It's all about developing the bowling-muscles adequately and that can only happen while bowling in match conditions. It is also about having good habits and the right discipline. The gap between domestic and International cricket is huge and when players make that jump, it is important that they get the right advice and have the right idols during the transition phase. We have a good crop of young fast bowlers and I am sure they will learn along the way. And in Prasad you have the right man to learn about pace and control, which are essential to a fast bowler."
