Tirunelveli: The inaugural match between Tamil Nadu and Kerala in the four-team league of the 16th South Zone youth National football championship, organised by the Tirunelveli District Football Association, ended in a 1-1 draw at the Anna Stadium, Palayamkottai, on Saturday.

It was an intense struggle between the teams, but Tamil Nadu, which took the lead in the 24th minute, survived many anxious minutes before conceding a self-goal by Gowthaman in the 75th minute.

Baskar put Tamil Nadu in the lead. Outside-right Nova raced down the flank and sent a fine centre, which Kerala goalkeeper Sreeju collected and threw to a defender, but Baskar pounced on the ball and sent it into a far corner of the net.

Thereafter, Kerala went all out for the equaliser, but the Tamil Nadu goalkeeper Arulraj proved a stumbling block as he brought off good saves. However, the equaliser came in the form of a self-goal by Gowthaman of Tamil Nadu in the 75th minute.

Vineeth sent a powerful shot towards the goal and Arulraj could have easily collected it, but Gowthaman intervened and knocked the ball into his own net.
