LONDON: Players will be able to challenge onfield decisions made by umpires in a trial by the English and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) during the Friends Provident Trophy limited-overs tournament, the ECB head of operations, Alan Fordham, said on Tuesday.

The captain of the fielding team and the batsman in question will be able to refer calls to the TV umpire. Each team will be allowed two unsuccessful challenges per innings and the TV umpire will only be allowed to reverse a decision if it is beyond reasonable doubt that the umpire on the pitch has made a mistake.

The only dismissal that cannot be challenged is when a batsman is ``timed out.'' AP
