KOLKATA: In a repeat of last year's result the Nanoli Stud Sprinters' Cup (1,200m) fell to a runner in Dr. M. A. M. Ramaswamy's colours, trained by S. Ganapathy and bred at the Poonawalla Estates. The resemblance ended there for unlike outsider Spectacular Quest last year, Haunting Memories was the public choice at 5 to 4 after a flush of late money.
Dynasty and Evatina disputed the lead in the 8-runner field with Haunting Memories well up but four wide. The first-named assumed command in the straight, but under the strong driving of Colm O'Donoghue the favourite took the lead to score by two lengths despite drifting out in the closing stages. Oyster Cove was third and Evatina fourth as they finished in a bunch. The time was 1-11.65.
Having been runner-up last year, Deepak Khaitan's Aperitivo had experience over the gruelling 3,000m of the Olympia Technology Park Stayers' Cup. The consistent son of Diffident made it five-for-five at Kolkata this winter, when his rider, C. Rajendra, challenged midway up the straight. The hard-ridden Gentlemans Deal was a clear second, four lengths in arrears and about the same in front of Scintilating Skill. Vijay Singh has done a marvellous job with the Manjri-bred six-year-old.
