NEW DELHI: Assam Rifles defeated Simla Youngs 4-1 to qualify for the quarterfinal league stage of the Durand Cup football tournament at the Ambedkar Stadium here on Tuesday.

Dominating the last qualifying round match of Group A, Assam Rifles scored through Thoiba Singh (second minute), Neikingai Janei (third) and Hakumao (14th) to take a 3-0 lead at the lemon-break.

Simla Youngs’ Samson reduced the margin in the 62nd minute. However, Herojit Kumar of the winning team struck in the 90th minute to complete the tally.

Assam Rifles will join Mahindra United and Sporting Clube de Goa in the Group I for the quarterfinal league stage of the tournament. — Sports Reporter
