CHENNAI: The Squash Rackets Federation of India with financial support from the Union Ministry of Youth affairs and sports has planned till December four PSA and WISPA tournaments under the banner of ‘Indian Challenger series’, all to be held in Chennai.
The first one, a $6,000 PSA event and a $4,000 WISPA event, both to be held simultaneously, will be held from September 7 to 12.
The theme of these competitions, which will also have adequate foreign players taking part, is to provide exposure to the up and coming Indian players.
With the Commonwealth Games scheduled next year, these competitions, SRFI felt would go a long way in the preparations of the Indian teams for this mega competition.
The SRI Secretary-General, Srivatsan Subramaniam has thanked the Sports Ministry for all the support.
For the first event in the Indian Challenger series, players from Europe and Asia are expected, according to a press release. Dylan Bennett of Netherlands, ranked 71 will be highest ranked player on view while among the Indians, Harinderpal Sandhu at 141 takes the top place. Irina Assal (Russia) at 75 is the highest ranked player. Among the Indians in the fray include Anaka Alankamony, Aparajitha Balamurukan and Ankita Sharma.
The other events in this Challenger series include $10,000 PSA and $ 8000 WISPA events from October 5 to 10, $6000 PSA and $4000 WISPA events from November 16 to 21 and $10,000 PSA and $ 8000 WISPA events from December 7 to 12.
