Shane Bond adjudged Man-of-the-Match

Dunedin: New Zealand went 1-0 up in its three-Test series against Pakistan here on Saturday, with the collective efforts of its seamers ensuring victory by 32 runs in the first Test.

Debutant Umar Akmal made 75 — an innings that skipper Mohammad Yousuf termed better than his first innings hundred — but Pakistan never recovered from his dismissal, caught and bowled by Shane Bond to leave Pakistan six down with 56 to get.

The remaining batsmen only managed 23, with Iain O’Brien removing Kamran Akmal and Umar Gul before left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori scalped the last two, ending the Test with a return catch off Mohammad Aamer.

Bond, who took three wickets to add to his first-innings tally of four, was adjudged the Man-of-the-Match.

Disastrous start

Having dismissed the last two New Zealand wickets with just six runs added to the overnight score, Pakistan began its chase disastrously.

Pursuing 251 for victory, the visitor lost its top three with only 24 on the board, with Shane Bond and Chris Martin rampant.

It was here that Umar walked in to join Yousuf, who had begun with two fours and a hooked six off Martin in the very first over he faced.

Umar took 70 balls to bring up his first boundary, but opened up soon after with a flurry of attacking strokes, including a slog-swept six off Vettori.

Good partnership

Yousuf brought up the 50-run partnership with a straight drive for four off O’Brien in the 34th over, and with both batsmen firmly entrenched, New Zealand needed inspiration.

It came from Martin — in the form of an effort ball — which reared sharply and came in off the pitch to kiss Yousuf’s glove despite his efforts to evade it.
