Pune: In contrast to a clumsy show with the bat by the home team on Tuesday, Karnataka paraded its rich and gifted talent at the Poona Club here on the second day of the Ranji Trophy Group ‘B’ Super League tie.

While the Maharashtra batsmen faltered in the first innings, the youngsters in the Karnataka squad — K.B. Pawan, Ganesh Satish and Amit Verma — took charge of their side’s fortunes with superb three-figure knocks.

Huge lead

Thanks to Pawan’s well-compiled 152 (his career-high score), Satish’s gritty 141 and Verma’s dashing unbeaten 101, Karnataka reached 473 for four to establish a huge lead of 368 runs.

With six sessions left in the match, the South team and table topper in Group ‘B’ is all set to make Maharashtra pay heavily and virtually ensure a place for itself in the quarterfinals.

Without being spectacular, the Karnataka batsmen added 348 runs, scoring at almost four-an-over. And yet the best batsman on view was Manish Pandey, who made a sparkling 32 before he dragged his backfoot too far down the line for short-leg fielder Ankit Bawne to effect a smart run out.

The second-wicket stand produced 284 runs. While Pawan was comfortable driving off either foot, Satish showed a characteristic relish for the on-side. This was Satish’s first century in the Ranji Trophy.

Pawan’s knock had 17 hits to the fence while Satish hit 22 boundaries. The second new ball produced the breakthrough when Pawan essayed a hook and edged to the ’keeper. Satish was out driving left-arm spinner Kiran Adhav to mid-on.

Being a left-hander, Verma made it more difficult for the tired bowlers. His was a near flawless effort. Verma’s century came in well under three hours with 11 fours and a six.

In the last session, Maharashtra seamer and captain Harshad Khadiwale was penalised for chucking the fourth ball of his ninth over.

Former selection committee chairman Chandu Borde summed up the Maharashtra bowling saying: “They are not bowling to take wickets, but for the batsmen to make mistakes.”
