Chennai: Two headed first half goals gave ICF a 2-0 win over Don Bosco Annai Youth in its first match of this season’s St. Joseph’s-CFA senior division league here on Tuesday. This was Annai Youth’s second defeat in three matches.
Both sides struggled to find their feet in the initial high-tempo midfield tussles. ICF, however, seemed to have a clear gameplan — break swiftly down the flanks. The strategy gave them a clear early chance; T. Dhadeus, dropping deep from his centre-forward position, played a diagonal ball over the defence for right winger S. Suresh Kumar to chase. Suresh pulled back a low cross only for R.P. Ashok Kumar to miss from within the six-yard box.
The goal came soon after. Suresh took a free-kick on the edge of the Annai Youth box, a few yards from the right touchline. The ball hung invitingly in the box, and F. Jegan leapt high to power his header home sweetly.
It was Suresh, coming in opportunistically from the right, who scored the second, with a glancing header. The chance was created thanks to some swift one-touch passing on the left that freed up J. Auxiano to get behind the right fullback to cross. Annai Youth goalkeeper S. Rajini was partly culpable for the goal; he could have come off his line to intercept the cross, which hung within the six-yard box.
Earlier, Universal RC and Madras Eagles played out a goalless draw in a first division match.
