Hyderabad bowlers were far from threatening

Ajinkya Rahane demonstrated fine footwork

Mumbai: Mumbai’s run-scoring machine prevailed on a hot day at the Bandra-Kurla Complex on Tuesday. Wasim Jaffer, a batsman of colossal scores in the domestic competitions, and Ajinkya Rahane, a rising star, piled up runs against a listless Hyderabad in the first three sessions of the Ranji Trophy super league match.

Embarrassed by Saurashtra at Rajkot where it had to fight to save its skins, Jaffer (204 batting, 268b, 21x4, 2x6) and Rahane (137 batting, 236b, 11x4, 1x6) reserved their batting for a greater need of at least winning the first innings points from its fifth match.

By posting 366 for the loss of Vinayak Mane, the host seems to be well on the road to achieve that purpose.

Correct style

Jaffer’s style was correct and forcible right through his six hour tenure in the middle and Rahane demonstrated fine footwork.

The Hyderabad bowlers were far from threatening, except in the first hour when M.P. Arjun, used the seam exceptionally well.

Absorbing tussle

The tussle between the bat and ball was absorbing and Hyderabad thoroughly deserved the success when Mane, playing his first Ranji match in two seasons, nicked to the wicketkeeper.

The second wicket pair’s strength of mind and skill was as much noticed as their freshness of strokes. It was a very close finish for the half-century race between, Jaffer and Rahane; the opener managed to get there at stroke of lunch, a few minutes after his partner had raised his bat towards the pavilion.

But after the long interval, it was a Jaffer show all the way and Rahane did not attempt to compete with his captain. At stumps they had added 328 runs, 37 more than Mumbai’s record for the second wicket in the national championship (291 between Ghulam Parkar and Guru Gupte) against Tamil Nadu 27 years ago at the Chepauk. It was Jaffer’s 19th century for Mumbai and 34th in first class cricket.

The scores: Mumbai — 1st Innings: V. Mane c Kumar b Arjun 5, W. Jaffer (batting) 204, A. Rahane (batting) 137; Extras (lb-10, nb-4, w-6) 20; Total (for one wkt. in 90 overs) 366.

Fall of wicket: 1-38.
