Chennai: Shifted to the indoor stadium at the Sathyabama University on account of the foul weather throughout the day, the State volleyball championship on Wednesday was confined to elite Group A and B matches.

Defending champion Indian Overseas Bank faced a stern challenge from host and sponsor, Sathyabama University, with the third set going finishing at 31-29.

Sathyabama, however, beat Income Tax RC in the other Group A match.

The other leading contender, Indian Bank scored a facile victory over Panimalar Engineering.

On Thursday, the women’s matches will be held at the University Union Indoor Stadium, while the men’s programme will continue at Sathyabama University.

The results: Group A: Indian Overseas Bank bt Sathyabama University 21-25, 25-19, 31-29; Sathyabama bt Income Tax RC 25-15, 25-18.

Group B: SDAT bt Panimalar Engg. College. 25-17, 25-22; Indian Bank bt State Bank of India 29-27, 25-19. State Bank bt SDAT 20-25, 29-27, 25-18; Indian Bank bt Panimalar 25-17, 25-17.

‘Royals Army’ announced

Capitalising on the success of Rajasthan Royals in the first IPL Twenty20 cricket championship, the team management announced on Wednesday that it would form its own fan club, called the ‘Royals Army,’ to reach out to fans globally.

Royals Army will have five fan clubs including the Maharaja Club (membership base of 400 members), Captain’s Club (membership base of 500 members), Royal Lions Club (membership base of 9,000 members), Royal Bugles Club (unlimited membership base) and the Young Royals Club (for those aged between 5-15. Membership base is unlimited).

The membership fee of these clubs would range from Rs. 2,500 to 2.5 lakh.

Based on the membership acquired, the benefits would include hospitality for matches, official team jersey, cap, merchandise, autographed bats, newsletters, party invites, online ticket access, discounts and many more.

Madras varsity is runner-up

University of Madras finished second in the all-India inter-university volleyball tournament at Kannur University (Kerala) recently.

The results: Final: Kannur bt University of Madras 25-22, 25-21, 25-20. Semifinals: Madras bt Anna 25-22, 25-21, 25-20. League: Madras bt Calcutta 25-15, 25-12, 25-10; bt SRM 25-23, 25-22, 25-20.

CFA matches postponed

Due to heavy rain and consequent unplayable turf condition at the Nehru Stadium, the matches scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday in the St. Joseph’s-CFA senior division and first division league have been postponed.

Spate of walkovers

A series of walkovers marked the CHA I-division league championships at Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium here on Tuesday.

The results: AGORC w/o Raja Manickam Mem.; Air India w/o Cathedral United; United Gymkhana w/o Cathedral United; MCC 2 drew with HVF 2.
