Chennai: The former Mayor of Madras (now Chennai), Era Sambandam, who served as Vice-President, Tamil Nadu Hockey Association and President, Chingleput District HA, died on Oct. 26 after a brief illness. He was 82.

A club player, promoter and patron, Sambandam was a familiar figure in the city’s hockey circles for over five decades.

The Nungambakkam Youngsters, which he founded, was a nursery for several young players who made it to a higher grade in the sport. He led the State team on a tour of Japan in 1965.

He is survived by three sons, one of whom is Malar Selvan, President of Tamil Nadu Baseball Association, and a daughter, Ms. Porkodi Mani, former Secretary of the State women’s HA.
