CHENNAI: International Master Deep Sengupta of Indian Oil (Kolkata) won the Late Yogesh Gore Memorial FIDE-rating chess tournament that concluded at Chakradharpur in Jharkhand on Thursday.
Deep, a former World under-12 champion, started as second seed and won the tournament with 10 points from 11 rounds.
He originally belongs to Chakradharpur and defeated IM P.D.S. Girinath of South Central Railway in the final round to receive a cash prize of Rs. 50,000.
A total of 205 players from India, Bangladesh, and Nepal participated in the week-long tournament in which seven players were IMs.
The tournament was a tribute to Yogesh Gore, a talented player from Bilaspur who passed away in May 2006 at the age of 31 following a rare illness during a tournament.
IM Himanshu Sharma of Haryana finished second with nine points and received Rs. 25,000.
Channai’s IM R.R. Laxman (ICF) started as top seed, but finished third with 8.5 points to get Rs. 12,000.
