BANGALORE: Olympian and freestyle sprint ace Virdhawal Khade will spearhead the Indian challenge in the Commonwealth Youth Games scheduled to be held at Pune from October 12 to 18. The swimming competitions will be held from October 15 to 17.
The Swimming Federation of India (SFI) on Friday announced a 22-member Indian squad, comprising 10 boys and 11 girls and T.D. Vijayraghavan, Vice-President, SFI, released the list.
Basis for selection
The swimmers were selected based on their performance at the FINA World Youth Swimming Championship at Mexico, Junior Nationals held at Amritsar and separate selection trials held during the Junior Nationals at Amritsar.
The team has been training at the SAI (South) pool here for a fortnight and the chief National coach S. Pradeep Kumar said: “The training has gone well but it is premature to say anything about our chances since we do not have the list of contestants from other countries. But we hope to put a good show.”
Khade, who is in good shape, expressed the hope that he would pick up a few medals at the meet. “I have trained well and though there was not much of a break after the Olympics, I feel fine and ready to go,” Khade said.
