PUDUCHERRY: BEML Bangalore edged a fighting Titanium Thiruvananthapuram 1-0, the solitary goal coming from African recruit Mohammed Hayath Khalendar in the dying minutes of the match on Wednesday, in the south zone qualifying round of the Federation Cup football tournament.
The win ensured BEML’s passage to the next round of the qualifying phase along with ICF Chennai.
BEML and ICF will face each other on Friday (Thursday is a rest day) to decide the zonal winner.
More than a handful
With three foreign players in its ranks, all from Africa, the Bangalore outfit was more than a handful and this reflected in the struggle that Titanium had right through.
In the first half a defence lapse had Khalendar and Samuel Jackson pouncing on the opportunity. Titanium was able to salvage the situation after conceding a flag kick. Later Khalendar messed up a gilt-edged chance with a header right into goalkeeper Nawaz’s hands.
In the 87th minute, Ricky Joy of BEML progressed with the ball from the right flank and at the nick of time centred to trigger a goal area melee. The Titanium defence could not stop Khalendar from nodding in the all important goal. — special Correspondent
