KHAMMAM: Fourth seed S. Aravind of Vizag defeated top seed Sumith Reddy of Hyderabad 21-19, 21-17 in the boys’ final, while top seed N. Sikki Reddy of Hyderabad struggled to beat fourth seed P.V. Sindhu (Hyderabad) 17-21, 21-18, 21-17 in the girls’ final of the AP State junior badminton championship that concluded at Jubilee officers’ Club here on Sunday.
In the boys’ doubles final, Vizag’s Naveen and Ravi Raj outplayed Aravind and Jawahar 21-19, 21-17, while P.V. Sindhu, partnering Manisha ousted top seed Sikki Reddy and Lalitha 11-21, 22-20, 21-13 to clinch the girls’ doubles title.
Saina to be honoured
The Andhra Pradesh Badminton Association (APBA) has decided to present Rs.1.5 lakh to Saina Nehwal for her stupendous performance at the Olympic Games at Beijing. Saina reached the quarterfinal of women’s singles event.
The meeting also decided to host a major ranking tournament at Guntur’s NTR Stadium from January 8 to 21, 2009.
The Senior State championship will be held at Tirupati from August 27 to 30. Both State u-16 and u-13 hampionships slated to be held at Hyderabad and Srikakulam respectively, have been advanced by one day.
The Hyderabad tourney will be held on September 10 instead of September 11 and Srikakulam tourney will be held on September 14 instead of September 15, according to APBA secretary K. Ch. Punnaiah Choudary.
