Chennai: The top two seeds Ram S. Krishnan of BSNL and former National sub-junior champion Ashwath were held to fighting draws in the third round of the S.K. Narasihman Memorial FIDE Rating Tournament being played at the Nehru Stadium on Wednesday.

Ram had an extra pawn but the game came down to a king rook pawn ending which was drawn by national arbiter Sethil Kumaran of Madurai in 58 moves. Eleven-year-old S. Kaushik held well known Ashwath to a creditable 69-move draw. “I was slightly better in the middle but could not win,” said Ashwath, who employed the Breyer variation of the Spanish opening.

Eleven players are in lead with full three points. It includes two tall former National ‘A’ players, FIDE Master K.V. Shantharam of Indian Bank and V. Subramanian. Shantharam accounted for Tamil Nadu Junior Girls Champion J. Saranya and Subramanian overcame George Daniel. Eight rounds remain to be played.
