NEW DELHI: Viswanathan Anand overpowered Spain’s Francisco Vallejo Pons 3.5-2.5 to enter the final of the Leon rapid chess tournament in Leon, Spain, on Saturday.
Anand will play the winner of second semifinal between Ukraine’s Vassily Ivanchuk and Spain’s Alexei Shirov.
The four-game rapid match ended 2-2 before Anand won the first of the two blitz tiebreak games with black pieces in 58 moves of Sicilian Defence.
Thereafter, Anand played white and drew the second blitz game in 29 moves of Caro Kann.
Anand, looking for his fourth straight title at Leon, took the lead after winning the second rapid game but Vallejo bounced right back by clinching the third.
The players took no chance in the fourth rapid game and drew in just 18 moves to take the match into tie-breaking blitz games.
