Six players would be flown to the Bayern Football School

Kahn gets honorary membership to Mohun Bagan

KOLKATA: Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld was not much concerned about his team not having a practice session ahead of it match with Mohun Bagan.

“We have some social responsibilities, so that won’t allow us time for practice,” Hitfield said.

The team played with local kids in a coaching clinic organized by its sponsor Adidas at Calcutta Cricket and Football Club. “We have practiced enough in Bali and that I feel it is sufficient to keep us in right shape,” said Hitzfeld referring to the two-and-a-half day’s rest the team had in Bali.

The visitors enjoyed every bit of their practice session sharing their knowledge and expertise with 48 children who were selected from different tournaments, both local and outstation.

It was interesting see the stars of world football like Kahn, midfielder Mark van Bommel of the Netherlands , Andreas Ottl, Brazilian Ze Roberto, Argentinean Jose Ernesto Sosa doing drills with the budding footballers.

The party also included Michael Rensing, Bayern’s other custodian to whom Kahn will be symbolically handing over the gloves on on Tuesday.

The visitor selected six players from among participants who would be flown to the Bayern Football School in Germany by Lufthansa who is sponsoring their travel — to attend the FC Bayern Football Camp later in the year.

Contributing equally to the sentiment surrounding the match, Mohun Bagan sought to name its goalkeeper Sangram Mukherjee as the captain of their face-off against the German giant.

“It is Oliver Kahn’s farewell match and we have to ensure that our guests have something to cherish about their visit to the city,” said the Mohun Bagan secretary Anjan Mitra.

With captain Baichung Bhutia and N.S. Manju unavailable owing to National duty and Brazilian Jose Barreto still holidaying at home, Mohun Bagan will have to rely on the skills of Habibur Rehman Mondal, P. Lalawmpuia, Lalkamal Bhowmik among others.

The Mohun Bagan secretary said the club would be presenting a boat made of sliver to Bayern, while Kahn will be given a honorary membership of the club.

The kick-off, which was previously scheduled at 6.30 p.m. was brought 15 minutes ahead on the request of the visitor.
