GREATER NOIDA: Rahul Bajaj won his first amateur title on Friday.

The 21-year-old was so overwhelmed after winning the LG Jaypee amateur golf tournament at the Jaypee Greens here that he was speechless at the closing ceremony.

Bajaj brought in a two-over 74 on the last day for a level par aggregate of 288. He was one shot ahead of Gagan Verma, the overnight leader. Verma could manage only a 76 in the last round.

“It is just not sinking in. I do not have words to describe my happiness,” said Bajaj.

“I think it is too early to say but I would definitely want to turn professional as soon as I can,” he added.

A nervous bogey on the final hole spoilt Bajaj’s card.

Verma began confidently with three pars, while Bajaj had a bogey on the second and a birdie on the third.

Both had a bogey next before Verma bogeyed the next three holes to give the lead away.

The scores: Rahul Bajaj (71, 67, 76, 74) 288; Gagan Verma (68, 68, 77, 76) 289; Manav Das (75, 69, 75, 71) 290 ; Vasudeva, Karan (76, 73, 67, 75) 291; Arshdeep Tiwana (74, 73, 73, 74) 294; Moin Malak (72, 74, 74, 75) and Kapil Kumar (70, 72, 76, 77) 295; Tarun Ghoghale (73, 75, 76, 72) and Saurabh Bahuguna (70, 78, 74, 74) 296; Vikram Rana (76, 73, 75, 73) 297; Gopal Singh (79, 70, 71, 78) 298; Simarjeet Singh (74, 74, 76, 75), Pawan Kumar (78, 77, 69, 75) and Amanjyot Singh (75, 74, 73, 77) 299.
