Association secretary not to contest elections; support likely for M. V. Sridhar

HYDERABAD: It was a top-spinner the club secretaries were in no mood to face. Just when there was a festive mood soon after the floodlighting of the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium (Uppal), N. Shivlal Yadav, secretary of Hyderabad Cricket Association, plunged them into darkness by announcing that he will not contest the elections anymore. “Enough is enough. I have decided to call it a day. I have to respect my family members’ sentiments. There is no way I will be in the fray for elections to HCA (originally scheduled next month),” he told the stunned, 80-odd members late on Wednesday night even as they were assembling to celebrate the grand occasion of the venue getting floodlit. For all those close to Shivlal, this decision may not have come as a surprise. His line of argument is – what more is there to achieve? “I have seen the world-class stadium come up and now the floodlighting is complete; things which my predecessors could only dream off,” is Shivlal’s logic.

Interestingly, after the brief announcement in the presence of G. Vinod, Minister and president of HCA, Shivlal left the venue in a hurry even as some of them insisted that he should continue. “No way,” was the terse reply from the secretary. What was intriguing for the HCA office-bearers was the timing of the decision and the venue. No doubt, there was dissent too about his indifference to the idea of not giving a grant of at least Rs. 1 lakh each to the clubs for development programmes from the annual BCCI grant of Rs. 10 crore.

Meanwhile, it is hinted that M. V. Sridhar will be backed for the coveted secretary’s post in the elections likely to be held after the IPL in the first week of June as HCA cannot afford a change of guard midway through the mega event. And, call it coincidence or of things to come, former HCA president M. Ranga Reddy made one of those rare appearances at the stadium.

The big question remains – will there be a change of mind in Shivlal at the last minute or not?
