KOLKATA: Unseeded Vivek Shokeen of Delhi stunned his doubles partner and eighth-seeded Divij Sharan (Delhi) 6-4, 6-3 in the men’s singles first round of the National tennis tournament at the South Club here on Tuesday.
Joining Sharan was the sixth-seeded Rohan Gide of Services, who was defeated by Ronak Manuja of Maharashtra.
Shokeen ran into trouble with Sharan earning two break points in the fifth game.
Despite faltering Shokeen managed to hold on to his game and turned the tables on Sharan in the 10th game that fetched him the first set (6-4). While getting fluent with his service, Shokeen won the second set (6-3) and the match with another lone break in the fourth game.
“Divij is a better player on grass with serve-and-volley approach. He is also a left-hander, which is an advantage. But today seemed to be my day,” said Shokeen, who has reached the doubles quarterfinals partnering Sharan.
