Bargur: Indian Bank (Chennai) opened its campaign with a stunning 20-25, 25-18, 25-19, 21-25, 15-13 win over defending champion BPCL (Kochi) in the 12th National league volleyball championship (final leg) for men and women at the Government GHSS courts here on Monday.

“It was quite unexpected because the players were quite high on morale. We started off strongly by winning the first set but messed it up midway through. And, that’s because we failed to get our first passes right. Also, our attack lost a bit of sting. We have lost but we will cover it up by winning the remaining matches,” BPCL’s coach K. Sethumadhavan said.

After the Chennai men had upset BPCL in the opener it was time for another boil over. Indian Overseas Bank (Chennai) sailed to its first win defeating Southern Railway (Chennai) 25-23, 23-25, 13-25, 25-22, 18-16 in an edge-of-the-seat thriller.

The results: Men: Indian Bank (Chn) bt BPCL (Kochi) 20-25, 25-18, 25-19, 21-25, 15-13; Indian Navy (Kochi) bt KSEB (Tvm) 32-30, 25-20, 25-13; Indian Overseas Bank (Chn) bt S. Rly (Chn) 25-23, 23-25, 13-25, 25-22, 18-16. — Sports Reporter
