CHENNAI: The India Cements Limited group, which owns the Chennai franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL), announced on Monday that its cricket team will be called the Chennai Super Kings.
The name and logo — a lion in minimalist style foregrounded by the name in solid lettering — were unveiled at a city hotel on Monday in the presence of past and present Tamil Nadu cricketers, TNCA members, and Krishnamachari Srikkanth, the brand ambassador.
The name ‘Chennai Super Kings’ was chosen from 25,000 entries after the city’s fans were given the opportunity to name their team.
N. Srinivasan, vice-chairman and managing director of India Cements, said the Twenty20 league was an excellent opportunity for Chennai’s “expert cricket followers” to watch high-quality fare.
The 44-day IPL, which starts on April 18, will feature eight teams in home and away games leading to the semifinals and final. The Chennai Super Kings will play seven matches at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium here.
“We are looking at IPL as an opportunity to spread the game and unearth fresh talent,” said Srinivasan. “We shall do our utmost to ensure that promising players get the much coveted opportunity to play with global cricketing stars and icons and lift their game,” he added.
On the player auction scheduled in Mumbai on February 20, Srinivasan said the franchise will look to assemble a balanced team capable of winning the tournament.
Asked about the pricing of tickets, he said the details were being worked out and will be made public soon.
Former India captain Srikkanth had the audience in splits, saying he was the ideal brand ambassador for the Twenty20 format having seldom batted for more than 20 overs during his playing days.
“It promises to be exciting,” said Srikkanth.
