KOLKATA: Sudanwa Sitaram entered the final of the Grade III ITF junior tennis tournament at the DKS complex here on Thursday.
Sitaram, who won the grade II event in Gurgaon last week, will meet his doubles partner Akash Wagh in the final on Friday. Third seeded Sitaram beat sixth seeded Roman Piftor of Uzbekistan in one of the boys’
semifinals while eighth seeded Wagh sprung a minor upset overcoming fourth seeded compatriot Christopher Marquis in the other match.
Eighth seeded Kyra Shorff of India emerged as the favourite for the girls’ title. In an all-Indian semifinal she blew away seventh seeded Rishika Sunkara 6-1, 6-2 to face fifth seeded Sweta Solanki in the title clash. Solanki too came out with a sparkling performance to defeat third seeded Rashmi Teltumbde in straight sets. She lined herself up for a double crown reaching the girls’ doubles final partnering Indonesia’s Grace Ysidora.
Sitaram took less than an hour to register a 6-2, 7-6(5) win. The Indian breezed through in the first set breaking Piftor thrice in the process. In the second set Piftor came up with better returns.
The set reached the tiebreakers after the players had traded breaks in the second and third games. The Indian won it 7-5 to wrap up the match. In other match Wagh got the better of Marquis with a 6-3, 6-2 victory.
