KOCHI: The Lotus Trophy all-India tennis tournament, making a comeback after 12 years, will be held at the Lotus Club here from January 23 to 26.

The event will be held on synthetic courts with prize-money for the first time. A few matches will be held under floodlights too. Competition in men’s singles and doubles, women’s singles and mixed doubles will be held in the four-day event which carries a prize fund of Rs 1.5 lakh.

“Many top players like Ramanathan Krishnan, Nandan Bal, Vasudevan and Enrico Piperno have played here,” said Thomas Oommen, the tournament’s organising committee chairman.

This time, Tamil Nadu’s Vinod Sridhar, ranked No. 14 in the country, and Karnataka’s Asha Nandakumar (No. 12) have been given the top billing in the men’s and women’s categories.

Vijay Sunder Prashanth, Arjun Gautham, Kamala Kannan, Sriram Balaji in the men’s section, and Rajur Chirasanthi and Anushree Thamanna in the women’s are some of the top players who will figure in the event.

Easy for VPR

VPR beat Vadakkumpad by seven wickets to move into the semifinals of the Kannur District `B’ Division cricket league here on Monday. Also through to the last four is Friends, which defeated Brennen College by four wickets.

The scores: Vadakumpad 88in 21.1 overs lost to VPR 89 for 3 in 11.3 overs.

Brennen College 120 in 19 overs ( Anwar Pasha four for 24) lost to Friends 124 for six in 19.3 overs.

Mar Ivanios ‘B’ records win

Mar Ivanios College ‘B’, Thiruvananthapuram and St. Albert’s College, Ernakulam recorded wins in the 46th Mar Ivanios Trophy inter-collegiate basketball tournament at the Mar Ivanios College floodlit courts here on Monday.
