NEW DELHI: World champion Viswanathan Anand broke a five-draw sequence and tasted a much-needed victory in the seventh round of the Corus chess tournament on Saturday when the Indians enjoyed their best day so far at Wijk aan Zee, in Holland.
In Group ‘B’, K. Humpy scored her first victory and P. Hari Krishna drew while in Group ‘C’, Parimarjan Negi coasted to his fourth win.
Anand, who has been searching for victory in the past week after starting his campaign with a rare loss, got his act together with the black pieces against Hungary’s Judit Polgar.
In a game that brought back memories of the battle between the two at the same venue in 1998, Anand avenged that loss in 53 moves of Sicilian Najdorf.Midway through the game, Judit traded her queen for two rooks. Thereafter, Anand’s queen and knight wrecked Judit’s position. The Hungarian gave a rook for the knight but an unrelenting Anand was not to be denied victory on this day.
The triumph took Anand’s tally to 3.5 points and saw him share the fifth spot. Norway’s Magnus Carlsen continued to lead at five points.
Humpy, too, ended her winless streak by stopping Poland’s Michael Krasenkow in 94 moves of Modern Defence. Meanwhile, Negi raced away to his fourth victory in the last five games. He crushed USA’s Irina Krush in just 39 moves and reached four points to share the sixth spot.
