KOLKATA: Mohun Bagan continued its run by beating Mahindra United by a solitary goal in a ninth round match of the I-League football at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Saturday. Brazilian striker Jose Barreto headed home the winner in the 61st minute to help Bagan stretch its winning streak to three successive matches.
The victory while ensuring full three points also helped Mohun Bagan end the first phase of the premier club league on a bright note.
It tallied 14 points overtaking Mahindra to the fourth position in the league table. The Mumbai team remained on its previous collection of 11 points.
The decisive goal came almost midway through the second session when Shanmugam Venkatesh set up James Singh with a diagonal pass. The latter essayed a measured cross to the Mahindra goalmouth and Barreto finished with move with a neat header.
Mahindra, relying mostly on counter-attacks, had opened up the Mohun Bagan defence twice but the goal remained elusive as the opposition custodians Shilton Paul and his replacement later, Sangram Mukherjee made brilliant saves to block the efforts of Manjit Singh (56th minute) and Douhousey Pierrre (second session injury-time).
