Veteran shuttler Anup Sridhar shut out 14-year-old A.S.S. Siril Verma in the men’s singles semifinal of the Canara Bank all-India senior ranking badminton tournament.
The 30-year-old Sridhar will face Saurabh Varma, who dispatched his brother Sameer Varma 21-16, 21-15 in the other semifinal, in the summit clash on Saturday.
Sridhar, slow on his feet but quick to spot an inviting, empty spot on the opponent’s court, shut down his younger, more aggressive opponent with deft touch and placement.
Siril did force his way back into the match by winning the second game 21-18, but once again, Sridhar relied on his vast experience to pull him through. While Siril — who covered the court with electric speed — felt the pressure in the decider, Sridhar held his nerve to finish the contest.
In the women’s singles, Air India’s Tanvi Lad upset the top-seed Arundhati Pantawane to win 21-13, 20-22, 21-16.
