KOLENCHERRY: Some of the country’s brightest young stars will be seen in action in the all-India inter-university women’s basketball championship which begins at the St. Peter’s College here on Thursday.

Eight teams, including host Mahatma Gandhi University (Kottayam), defending champion GNDU (Amritsar) and last year’s runner-up SRM (Chennai), will figure in the three-day league-cum-knockout tournament.

The teams have been divided into two groups and the top two from each group will progress to the semifinals. After the league matches, the semifinals will be played on Friday afternoon and the final on Saturday.

The matches will begin at 7 a.m. on Thursday but the official inauguration, by the Mahatma Gandhi University Vice Chancellor Rajan Gurukkal, will be at 3 p.m.

The groupings:

Group A: Mahatma Gandhi (Kottayam), GNDU (Amritsar), Kurushetra, Kannur.

Group B: Delhi, Madras, SRM (Chennai), VBS Purvanchal. — Principal Correspondent
