All India Football Federation (AIFF) president Praful Patel has observed the contentious Sports Code should not pit the National Federations against their international parent bodies. He also called for approval from the Parliament if the Code had to be implemented.

Patel, speaking to the media at the ‘Goal 2013’ convention on the business of Indian football here on Thursday, said, “There are certain sets of FIFA and AFC rules and AIFF cannot go against these guidelines.” He feared disaffiliation from the international body in case there was defiance from the AIFF.

The issue of Sports Code being implemented for the Indian Olympic Association’s election ended in suspension of the IOA by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Patel also assured AIFF backing to two clubs supported by the Corporate sector. “Commercialisation is important in raising the game’s profile,” he added. The clubs, however, will have to promise development in infrastructure apart from establishing a separate commercial profile.

Patel also asserted that the AIFF would strictly adhere to the AFC club licensing criteria from the coming season.

A city-based clubs tournament was also in the offing, he said.
