The fortunes of Kerala athletes are safe in the hands of the younger generation.

This was the message that emerged loud and clear on the third day of the 56th Kerala State schools athletic meet at the University stadium here on Thursday, as P. Mohammed Afsal, P.U. Chithra (both Palakkad) and Mariya Jaison (Kottayam) shared the spotlight with performances that blew the heart away.

The day saw a total of nine new meet records being established, holder Ernakulam suffer some acute embarrassment and the golden trio of Afsal, Chithra and Mariya go one better than the existing National schools record in their respective events.

The other athletes who cornered attention with new meet marks were Twinkle Tomy (senior boys, 1500m), B. Abin (senior boys, triple jump), K.R. Sujith (junior boys, 5km walk), T. Arya (senior girls, 100m hurdles), P.K. Aleesha (junior girls, 1500m) and K.T. Neena (junior girls, 3km walk).

Chithra added a third title to her collection as she staved back the challenge from Jessy Joseph (Kozhikode) in fine fashion in the senior girls 1500m.

A protégé of P.T. Usha, Jessy was the firm favourite for the title but Chithra had other ideas as she stayed along with her rival at the top of the race until the final lap.

The pint-sized Palakkad girl made her move once the two touched the curve and stayed ahead of Jessy as she finished the race in 4:31.78, almost a good ten seconds better than her own meet record and the National mark of 4:36.75.

A trainee with the Jumps Academy in Pala, Mariya showed good technique for her age as she rewrote the existing meet mark of 2.81m with an effort of 3.00m.
