Chennai: Top seeds, B. Adhiban in boys and Padmini Rout in girls, suffered their first defeat in the seventh round of the National Junior chess championships on Thursday.

After an eventful round — Bhakti Kulkarni of Goa who accounted for Padmini Rout of Orissa widened her lead to one point and scored full seven points. One point behind her is B. Pratyusha (AP) on six points in second place. Padmini is in the third position with 5.5 points. Defending champion M.R. Lalith Babu of Andhra, who defeated Adhiban, is in joint lead in the the boys’ section. Lalith Babu and three Chennai players — Shyam Sundar, C. Ramnath Bhuvanesh and Arun Karthik — are ahead with six points. There are six players who are tied for the fifth to 10th places: Adhiban, N.Srinath, S.P. Sethuraman, V.A.V. Rajesh (all Chennai), Mehar Chinna Reddy (AP) and Swapnil Dhopade (Mah).
