Billed as a contest worth a watch, the sizeable Easter Sunday crowd went back disappointed. The Kolkata sides — Mohammedan Sporting and Bhawanipore FC — played out an insipid goalless draw to share two points in the first leg of the final round second division I-League encounter here on Sunday.

Bhawanipore saw more of the ball but failed to convert the half chances while at the other end Sporting never really tested the rival custodian Debjit Majumder.

Sedate start

The match began on a sedate note, more so since the two teams had shared two goals and points in a group match earlier and rather knew the strengths and weakness of the rival camps. Sporting was further handicapped with two substitutions by the 12th minute itself due to injuries. Undaunted, Bhawanipore did stitch round a few sorties but to no avail.

The second half did pick up steam midway through as Bhowanipore twice came perilously close to scoring. Gurpreet Singh saw his stiff essay from the right corner being palmed away by Sporting’s Arnab Das Sharma in the goal and minutes later, Jahannath Das failed to direct the ball goalwards off a cross from the left.

At the other end, Wi Hyjuu muffed what looked the best chance that Sporting had, delaying a wee bit a cross from Gauranga Dutta and seconds before the final whistle went off, Jerry Zersingha let fly a right-footer which, however, sailed over and wide off the far post. Monday is a rest day.

The result: Md. Sporting 0 drew with Bhawanipore FC 0.
