The All India Football Federation’s efforts to scout for young talent ran into trouble with 12 of the 24 participating teams getting scrapped in the football festival for under-12 and 13 age groups which is being held at Kalyani.
The AIFF sought the medical tests of the players before the tournament this time, taking lessons from the fiasco last year when 84 out of the 120 players selected for the camp were found to be overaged.
With the AIFF rules stipulating that sides with more than three overaged players have to be scrapped, teams like host Bengal, Bihar, Orissa, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu were debarred, an AIFF official informed. Some teams have appealed the decision and the final number of debarred teams will be known later. — Principal Correspondent
