The numerous reasons given by Neel Metal Fanalca for the inordinate delay in clearing mounds of rubbish in parts of Chennai are far from convincing (Editorial “Politicising garbage,” Sept. 5). As a company with wide experience in conservancy operation, it should have promptly discharged its responsibilities. One wonders on what basis the government decided to award an important contract to the company without making proper assessment of its capacity. The new company should swing into action immediately bearing in mind the health hazard arising out of the serious situation. A fervent plea to politicians: please dispense with the practice of fishing in troubled waters, and view the problem in a larger perspective.
