The finding of a national survey that 10 million female foetuses have been aborted in the past two decades and that nearly 500,000 babies are lost annually due to selective abortion (Jan. 10) is disturbing. It is a matter of dismay and shame that the girl deficit is more common among educated families. There is little difference between female foeticide and infanticide, both of which work against the rights and interests of the girl child.
A balanced gender ratio is vital for the sustainable growth of society. Urgent steps need to be taken to curb foeticide. Only social awareness and people's conscience can do what laws have not been able to over the years.
