This refers to the report that the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, L.K. Advani, has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to contest the Lok Sabha election to enter Parliament (March 27). Dr. Singh, who gave a strong rebuttal to the BJP’s charge that he is a weak Prime Minster, should accept the challenge.
It is unfortunate that the Prime Minister of the largest democracy has not been elected directly by the people. It will be sad if this time too Dr. Singh, the prime ministerial candidate of the ruling party, is not fielded from any constituency.
If the Congress is confident of itself, it should accept Mr. Advani’s challenge of a televised debate with Dr. Singh. A debate cannot be seen as opposed to the parliamentary system. It is, in fact, better to engage publicly in an open discussion on the issues troubling the voters rather than make comments behind each other’s back.
