The article “The meltdown: whose crisis is it, anyway?” (Feb. 14) was yet another stirring piece from P. Sainath. It exposed the divide between the haves and the have-nots sharply yet again, this time against the backdrop of the global meltdown. That the CEOs of the corporate world seldom bother about spending from the company’s kitty is nothing new. What is sickening is that the vulgar display of their wealth is religiously recorded and piously reported by the media.

Sadly, in India too as in the U.S. and elsewhere in the West, bailout plans do not address the real targets of the global crisis. The several crores given in the stimulus package are meant to wipe the tears of the corporates, not the common man.
