The case involving the murder of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and his wife Kausar Bi is a litmus test for the integrity of the UPA Government at the Centre. It would do well to order a CBI inquiry into the incident that can bolster the confidence of dispirited sections of society apart from acting as a deterrent to errant members of law-enforcing agencies.

A CBI investigation will throw light not only on the encounter involving the Sohrabuddin couple but also earlier cases. It is a shame that a clean chit has been given to the Narendra Modi Government by the BJP high command.

The murder of the Sheikh couple is a stark reminder of police brutality in the name of combating terrorism. How can the custodians of the law be so inhuman?

Police officers such as those involved in the encounter are dangerous to our social fabric. The sordid saga once again highlights the politician-police nexus. Such encounters amount to state terrorism. The guilty should be given exemplary punishment.

The policemen concerned have done militants a great service. How can the government fight militancy effectively when the causes are not removed? Such killings only help increase terrorism.

After its admission that Kausar Bi was murdered and her body burnt, the Narendra Modi Government in Gujarat has lost all moral right to remain in power. One fails to understand how these law-enforcers can stoop to such a level? This revelation is only the tip of the iceberg.

The view that Mr. Modi has lost the moral right to continue as Chief Minister after the revelation about the encounter deaths is funny. Encounter deaths have occurred in almost all States. But why has there been no demand for a CBI probe and for the Chief Ministers of those States to resign?
