Apropos of your editorial on the Gautami Express fire tragedy (August 4), the primary culprit seems to be the passenger who used a stove aboard the train and the secondary culprits are co-passengers and the staff who ignored his violation. It is the duty of the railway staff to offload such passengers and hand over them to the railway police.

Strict enforcement of the well-intentioned rules against carrying inflammable materials is the only way to avert such tragedies.

Besides redesigning coaches with fire-retardant materials, the Railway administration should address the root cause of such accidents. Installation of fire alarms in trains is imperative. The Railway police should keep a tab on the baggage passengers carry.
