The Tibetan woman climber who reached the Everest summit on May 8 is Cireng Wangmu, according to the Page 1 photo caption (May 9, 2008). In the Xinhua graphic on International page it is Cering Wangmo. A reader’s query on the variation was referred to Pallavi Iyer in Beijing. She explains that Tibetan names do not have romanised forms and it is common to get different spellings for the same name.

Dr. Sabeel Ahmed who returned to Bangalore on May 8, 2008, spent 11 months in a U.K. jail. He was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment but the London Court held that he could be released because of the time spent in jail after his arrest on June 30, 2007. A report, “Sabeel Ahmed to be deported to India tonight” (May 6, 2008) had an opening sentence “Dr. Sabeel Ahmed will be deported tonight from the U.K. after spending 18 months in jail for withholding information about his brother Kafeel Ahmed’s plot to blow up Glasgow airport.”
A sentence in a Tiruchi report, “Principals oppose common syllabus” (Tamil Nadu, May 4, 2008) read “… the move towards a common syllabus would be diagrammatically opposite to the objectives of decentralisation.” It should have been diametrically.
