This refers to the report that four police officials have been arrested in connection with the alleged rape and murder of two women in Shopian. This is perhaps the first time that police officials, including a Superintendent of Police, have been arrested for alleged destruction of evidence. The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has rightly held that no relief, including bail, should be granted to the accused. It is imperative that the SIT be allowed to continue to function impartially and effectively so that justice is done in the case.
The people of Kashmir find a convenient whipping horse for any incident that takes place in the State. Except some verbal allegations on the involvement of the CRPF in the Shopian case, all evidence points to a dereliction of duty by the Kashmir police. Yet the people and the politicians of the State pounce on the military and the paramilitary forces.
