CHENNAI: Singapore President S.R. Nathan has expressed shock and sadness over the death of Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on September 2.

In his condolence message to the bereaved family on behalf of the people of Singapore, Mr. Nathan said that when he last met Dr. Reddy in May 2007, the Congress leader spoke with passion about what he wanted to achieve in Andhra Pradesh.

“Y.S.R. Reddy had made immense political contributions to Andhra Pradesh and India. He will be remembered as a statesman who served his country with dedication and distinction.”

In his distinguished political career, Dr. Reddy served in numerous capacities, most notably as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. He was especially known to put the interests of his people first. His 1,400-km ‘padyatra’ in 2003 showed his deep concern for the disenfranchised segments of the people of Andhra Pradesh. This remained fresh in the minds of many people today, Mr. Nathan said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this time of sorrow,” he said.
