A Standard XI student of the Government Higher Secondary School in Hosur, committed suicide at his house at Desingu Nagar in Mookandapalli area in Hosur on Friday after he was allegedly pulled up by villagers for stealing coins from a temple ‘hundi.’

Police said people in the area had witnessed the boy using a magnet to take out coins from the ‘hundi’ of Angala Parameswari Amman Temple. Sources said that feeling humiliated by the scolding, the Dalit boy went inside the house and locked himself up till evening.

The boy’s mother, who worked in a private company, returned home in the evening.

The boy’s father works as painter outside the town. His sister was in school.

His sister returned from school and knocked on the door.

As there was no response, she opened the bedroom windows and found the boy hanging from the ceiling fan. He had used a sari to hang himself.

The shocked girl alerted the neighbours. Police rushed to the place, removed the body and sent it to the Government Taluk Hospital in Hosur for post-mortem.

Hosur SIPCOT police registered a case under Section 174 (unnatural death) of the IPC.
