Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah has said that entrepreneurs were evincing interest to set up turbines to generate wind energy in the State following upward revision of power tariff.
Addressing the valedictory of the eight-day long convention of entrepreneurs from various walks of life at the Institute of Chartered and Financial Analysts of India (ICFAI) here on Wednesday, Dr. Abdullah regretted that power evacuation was a major challenge to non-conventional energy sources though the sector was picking up. In this background, his Ministry would recommend to the Planning Commission and Finance Ministry to improve transmission lines in the country.
He said an ambitious target of adding 20,000 MW from non-conventional energy was set by 2020. The first phase of the expansion plan which would be completed by 2013 aims at generating 1,300 MW, of which,1,100 MW would be connected to the grid and the rest allocated to individual consumers. Dr. Abdullah also said the wind sector would contribute 3,000 MW to the second phase expansion plan from 2013 which would see generation of 4,000 to 10,000 MW. India already stood fifth in the world in wind energy. The country would shift from the conventional kilo watt to mega watt machines to evacuate power. Three mega watt machines would be used for the purpose.
