The sacred shrine of Lord Venkateswara which otherwise is synonymous with religious and spiritual activities, was transformed into a temple town of marriages in the last two days.

The town was charged with the sonorous reverberations of wedding bells which otherwise is generally dominated by the recital of Vedic hymns and religious sermons.

Rough statistics reveal that over a thousand odd marriages were performed atop the sacred shrine in the past forty-eight hours.

While majority of the marriages were performed at the Tirumala Tirupati’s Devasthanam sprawling Kalyana Vedika, various religious institutions including TTD’s cottages housed the rest. The entire town was abuzz with marriage activities.

Auspicious ‘muhurtams’

Authorities attributed the reason for the sudden surge in the number of marriages to the lack of auspicious ‘muhurtams’ after the 16th of this month owing to the commencement of the two-month long ‘Sukra Moudyami’ – considered an ill-omen according to several Hindu almanacs.

Meanwhile, people thronging the sacred shrine to attend the marriages were subjected to severe difficulties with the non-availability of proper accommodation. Majority of the cottages and guest houses were occupied by the families of the marriages parties. Further compounding the difficulties were several VIPs including the State Minister, Viswaroop, who had come for the marriages of their kith and kin.
