Republic Day was celebrated with gaiety and enthusiasm here on Thursday. Collector K.Baskaran hoisted the National Flag and took ceremonial salute. He distributed assistance worth Rs.40.96 lakh to 147 persons including widows, ex-servicemen and those injured in war front. Chief Minister's medals for meritorious services were awarded to 43 persons. Ten personnel of the fire and rescue services were awarded commemorative certificates. Freedom fighters were honoured on the occasion. Cultural programmes by 680 school students followed the flag hoisting ceremony.

The 63rd Republic Day was celebrated in a grand manner in Tiruvarur on Thursday. Collector C.Munianathan hoisted the National Flag, and took the salute at the ceremonial police parade. He released pigeons to symbolise peace and amity.

He honoured freedom fighters. He distributed benefits worth Rs.17.26 lakh to126 persons. Cultural programmers by school children followed the flag hoisting. Xavier Dhanraj, Superintendent of police, A.Jayalakshmi, chairperson, Tiruvarur district panchayat council, N.Jeevakani, District Revenue Officer, and Ravichandran, chairman, Tiruvarur municipality, participated.


Ceremonial elegance and splendour was writ large at the 63 Republic Day celebrations at the sports stadium here on Thursday. Scores of tricolours punctuating the circumference of the stadium complex symbolised the patriotic fervour, and the myriad cultural display rang in a micro-narrative of the cultural diversity that is India.

Hoisting the Tricolour at 8 a.m., Collector T.Munusamy accepted the ceremonial guard of honour and took the flag salute. Chief Minister's medals for service excellence was awarded to 21 police personnel, and personnel from the Friends of Police,

Home Guards, and fire services were felicitated with commendation certificates. Freedom fighters were also felicitated on the occasion.

Students from Nagore Crescent Girls HSS , Nagapattinam Municipal Girls HSS, and Annai Sathya children's home bagged the first three prices respectively for cultural performances. Aparna Rope Malcolm of Natarajan Damayanthi HSS performed asanas on the occasion.

Welfare schemes to the tune of Rs.80.16 lakh were disbursed to 191 beneficiaries under various schemes through departments of revenue, differently abled welfare, backward classes and minorities, adi dravidar welfare, social welfare, mahalir thittam, agriculture, horticulture, agricultural engineering, and education department.
