NEW DELHI: The Opposition staged a walkout in the Lok Sabha on Monday to register their protest over the Centre's silence on the continuing violence in the Nandigram area of West Bengal.
The day's proceedings opened with the Opposition trying to raise Sunday's clashes in Nandigram in which one person was killed and two injured. However, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee refused to allow Vijay Kumar Malhotra (Bharatiya Janata Party) to raise the issue during question hour saying that it could be brought up later.
As soon as Mr. Malhotra raised the issue an hour later, CPI (M) members were on their feet shouting him down. With the Government refusing to react to Mr. Malhotra's poser as to whether the Centre would intervene to bring an end to the violence in Nandigram, the NDA benches emptied out.
